Cypher telegram to Sir J. Jordan (Peking)
Foreign Office, July 4th, 1916. 4.30.p.m.
No. 122.

Defence of Shameen.
Please inferm Consul-General at Canton that
General Officer Commanding Hongkong has been authorized
to use his discretion as to despatching a detachment
to Shameen in case of trouble. Arry Council attach
importance to detachment not running risk of being
shut up in Shameen, thus necessitating despatch of
further force to relieve it, and request that Mr.
Jamieson be instructed to concert measures for prompt
evacuation in case of necessity. He should communi-
case with Governor and Veneral Officer Commanding
Henkkong as to iš amires which he would propose to
take.
